oh the days seem
less holy
when things go
just all right
as if skin cells
didn’t
contain endless
possibilities
and the hours
dripping, skipping by
weren’t
a dance
bringing reality
into bright, glorious being

when everyone around you falls
away
and darkest hearts
ruin your day
when fires burn out
and applause fades to gray
when the vibes are getting you down
I’ll seek you out
add my light
find your crown
when friends and foes
start to look the same
and doubt fans the sinister flames
when kingdoms burn
right to the ground
I’ll add my light
find your crown
when sunrise halts
and demons play
when love and hate
twist round and round
I’ll take your hand
drag you out of the bounds
remind you who you are
find that damn crown
don’t hide your face
don’t second guess the way
you know your heart
go on
add your light
you know what to say
“Add Your Light” – Melissa Kircher
time goes by
and I
see all the reasons why
you and I
are in each other’s orbits
lessons learned
retinas burned
waiting for you to change
don’t stare at the sun
they say
but we do anyway
because we’re babes pretending to be grown
and we’ve both known
it’s not you, it’s me
hiding
from all I’m meant to be
and this is what we call
a relationship
two people rubbing elbows
and they don’t know
they are each other’s salvation
and not
weighing in
on the past that’s oh so present
no, that’s not what I meant
oh wait, yes I did
now I know to love you
like lovers do
became my own darkness spilling out the light
“Orbits” – Melissa Kircher
delicate as a flower — no
takes away all of my power — so
bendable, breakable
makes me expendable
I have no choice, you’ve taken my voice
by making me something beautiful
up on a pedestal
there is no credit — oh
then you go ahead and rip me down
pluck all my petals
testing my metal
don’t you know this queen owns a crown?
delicate this word that
saps all the strength that I do — have
feet on floor
grounded, I’m sounding
I’m pounding, I’m peeling
breaking all of your ceilings
tall above the crowd
I won’t bring my sisters down
or brothers
the thing about flowers is
you put them in vases
trapped in glass cases
and yet every year more grow in
filling the fields — and
choking the weeds — and
then you will know
the flowers are winning
friend, we’re mad grinning
while all of this healing flows
“Delicate As A” – Melissa Kircher
This misfit place
with its strange little freaks
the isle of the weird
the home of the geeks
I’m often alone here
though, sometimes I’m not
a friend will come calling
never someone I’ve sought
an oddball, a loner
someone peculiar, like me
then I look around and realize
how we’re all crammed together
just so different, but the same
on an endless blue sea

we are
the authors of our own souls
choices pressing
decided at
the whim of a gust of wind
conclusions
crazy
wonderful
the bloom of new life
springing from gray matter
dark energy turned green
we are the committee
the judge and jurors
what glorious freedom
in the creation
of a thousand indispensable breaths
Committee Meeting

stay
anchor in the depths
every drop in the ocean
sings for your presence
here
now
abide in the valley
where the air is thick and the river runs deep
where life and death intermingle
stay
rest
for you will have time on the heights
where the air is thin and the sun hot on your shoulders
the path winding down again before you
as you travel back
to the pain and unknowing and gut-twisting growth
the valley is night
the valley is ocean
the valley invites you to stay, anchor where the grass is green, the dirt, dirty
the water singing your soul home
when you stay
you learn
who you are
“Stay” -Melissa Kircher
I think poetry
might be inside you
I think the words
have always been there
ready to tumble from hesitant lips
I think the stars shine only for you tonight
and the earth turns
to keep you on it
I think I love you
though I don’t
know you half as much as I should
but I have this feeling that there is poetry inside you
the ineffable everlasting
sitting on the cusp of your tongue
and heart
and fingertips
take a chance
on yourself
“Poetry” -Melissa Kircher
there is me
a flame
me is a deep fire, burning
capable of holding space for great, gulping pain
I cry out to the night sky with wonder eyes, “Look at all the stars!”
my fire needs a cozy home
one whose walls I’ve built
not to keep everyone out,
but to protect against sharp gusts of wind
you know who you are
or maybe, you have no idea
either way
parts of the walls are hard and unyielding,
others soft and porous
I thought a long time about building my house
until one day there was no other way to live
my fire was a flicker
and to love myself I had to figure out how bricks and stone and leaves and sticks might
fit together for a while.
you might never be allowed in.
or I might invite you for tea sometime
some of you will build your own houses
these are the best kind of people
then we each leave and meet somewhere
together, out in the glorious day
but this is my house
this is me inside
the flame that I won’t let go out
I’m sorry
and I’m not
